With funding support from the Environment and Conservation Fund (ECF), Parks and Trails launched the “Trail Ambassador Education Project” in the past year to raise public awareness of the littering problem on Hong Kong’s hiking trails and to promote the importance of conserving the natural environment through Eco Educational Talks, “Waste Audit” activities, social media and the “Leave No Trace” storybook.
During the project period, we organized 22 Eco Educational Talks to introduce the uses and values of Hong Kong’s country parks and to help participating teachers and students understand the need to protect the natural environment. We also organized 24 “Waste Audit” activities to enhance the understanding of participants on the littering problem and its impacts on hiking trails. The total number of pieces of litter cleared during the activities was more than 13,700, with a total weight of over 115 kg.
In addition, we introduced to the public the use of country parks, its ecosystem services and biodiversity through social media, and promoted the concept of “Leave No Trace”. We have also produced an e-storybook, “Mysterious Mountain Adventure” (in Chinese only), to guide readers to put the principles into practice in the form of a story.
